(VIDEO CASSETTE FORMAT: VHS PAL) Born in Philadelphia in 1890, May Ray settled in Paris in 1921 to join the Dada movement. Gifted with great experimenting qualities, an artistic genius, May Ray turned cinema into a privileged creative area for his creation in which he crystallized a very personal artistic synthesis of his many esthetic concerns. With the advent of talking cinema, he gave up any wish to engage in a career in film, but, as an enlightened amateur, he continued to make short intimist films, autobiographical evidence of an extraordinary life. This videocassette includes the four films which established May Rey as a major figure of the 1920s avant-garde cinema: Le Retour a la raison and Emak Bakia (influenced by the Dada spirit), L'Etoile de mer (a surrealist film), Les Mysteres du chateau du de (boarding on surrealism), as well as eleven short autobiographical films.
